Thailand and Qatar either postpone or cancel MotoGP racing

On March 2, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that the MotoGP motorcycle race in the country will be delayed due to COVID-19 respiratory infection.

According to the original plan, the event will take place from March 20-22 in Northeast Thailand. Last week, Thailand’s MotoGP organizers were optimistic that the event would take place with the application of strict medical measures such as body temperature tests, masks and the use of antiseptic water.

However, on March 1, the Thai Ministry of Health announced that a 35-year-old man infected with COVID-19 in the country had died.

Speaking to the press, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that because the situation had changed and COVID-19 had become a major epidemic, it needed to ensure the national interests and the participants of the event. MotoGP will be delayed until further notice.

A day earlier, Qatar canceled the opening event of the MotoGP season scheduled for March 8. The International Motor Federation (FIM) stated that due to Qatar’s travel restrictions for several countries, including Italy, it has prevented the first-class drivers from attending the Losail race.
